The Castle of Welsperg in Welsberg

The castle Neuhaus in Gais
A place full of atmosphere, a castle tavern on a knoll – that’s Neuhaus, more charming than defying but the home of great minds: Oswald von Wolkenstein used to spend some years of his unsettled life here during the beginning of the 15th century and the well-known American poet Ezra Pound used it as a hideaway for himself and his family during the Second World War.

Welsberg, Paul Troger’s town
Paul Troger, Austrian Baroque painter, was born on 30th October 1698 the son of a sexton and dressmaker in Welsberg. His “Troger-blue” is still mesmerizing. The tour starts at his birthplace and goes on to the parish church where three of his masterpieces adorn the altar. You then stop at some other beautiful places and lanes of Welsberg.

Earth pyramids at Percha and Terenten
Some centuries ago, landslides caused by heavy rainfall left deep trenches on the hillside, which continued to be washed out by erosion over a long time. In some spots, heavy stones have prevented the soil from eroding, thus forming conical rock formations which resemble pillars. These so-called earth pyramids or fairy chimneys still continue to change, and new ones are formed every year especially during spring and winter times.

The Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park House

Les Viles and Cialciara in San Martino in Badia
The Viles, small hamlets built according to local tradition, are a scenic sight in the Val Badia valley. They mostly consist of small groups of farms arranged around a usually small central square with a shared water well and oven. These limestone ovens, or Cialciara as the locals used to call them, are a precious evidence of the self-sufficiency and economic autonomy of the Viles in the past.

The Hauserhof farm in Wielenberg (Percha)

Bergila in Issing (Pfalzen
Since the 3th generation in 1912, the distillery of pine oil and herb garden Bergila is we producing essential oils in a traditional and manual way. The feedstock is taken by surrounding areas, to maintain the grazing land, and then it will be distilled gently in the traditional distillery. In the herb garden are cultivated 70 different types of herbs by strict biological organic instructions. These herbs were reaped and dried at the right time, and will be packaged for tea. Or it will be made oil extracts, tinctures and other herb products. Not quantity, but quality has priority. The activity with the herbs should be interesting, and give the customers only 100% pure essential oil.

Cultural path Gais
Abidance and meditation. A quiet and harmonic round tour perfect for abidance and meditation. This is the path which leads from the village of Gais near Bruneck up to the Neuhaus Castle and back down again, crossing the stream, towards Aufelder and the Baustadlhof to finally reach the former Pfleger house. Along the path there are several pieces of art to honour great personalities who once lived or worked in the village of Gais such as the disputatious minnesinger Oswald von Wolkenstein, the American poet Ezra Pound, his daughter Mary de Rachewiltz as well as the sculptors Heinrich and Franz Bacher.
