The connection to the Sellaronda

The connection to the Sellaronda

The new eighth-orbit lift-system is called „Piculin“. Situtated on the south-west side of Piz de Plaies in S. Vigilio di Marebbe/St. Vigil in Enneberg, its valley station is located in Picolein in Badia valley, one kilometre from S. Martino in Badia/St. Martin in Thurn and offers parking lots, information booth, skipass office, ski deposit, ski rental and a restaurant (of course). The cableway covers a distance of 1,500 metres, ascends to an altitude of 500 metres, and carries 2,400 people an hour. It is definitely more than just a connection to Alta Badia. The cable system provides ski enthusiasts with a new attractive black slope, 2,000 metres long. By bus it is only 20 minutes to Alta Badia, and then one has one arrived at the Sellaronda in the heart of the Dolomites. The run isn’t new, on the contrary: since the seventies it has had a history of making skiers feel like heroes, causing their tongues to wag. “How long did it take, how many kilometres, and how many lumps and bumps were covered?” It is the undisputable king of ski highlights. In the 70s it had already become a tradition to circle it once, smugly remembering the old one-person chair lifts, which, thanks to power breakdowns, swung for hours in icy winds. In the 80s it became popular to make additional quick stops at other classic slopes: the “Porta Verscovo” in Arabba, the “Saslonch” in Val Gardena/Gröden, or the “Gran Risa” in Alta Badia. And today, in 2006/07, a totally new experience: travelling from the bald head above the Pustertal valley into this charming round object. Let’s bet that the Kronplatz-Sellaronda is going to be a new cult object!
