In the winter, the houses, churches, and farms of Valdaora-Olang are gently strewn with snow and softly bedded down. But the village is anything but hibernating! Numerous hikers head out on the carefully groomed trails, pressing them flat and even flatter. There are thirteen designated and marked winter hiking trails in Valdaora! That makes a total of 47.5 kilometers (30 miles) of the scent of snow, fresh winter air, and invigorating cold to redden the hiker’s cheeks. The palette of paths through the whiteness ranges from simple strolling and round-trip walks to gentle tours through the woods and field to half-day hikes with possibilities to stop off at inns to eat and drink. The winter air always gives hikers an appetite for Tyrolean Knödel dumplings. And for even more guessing of the animal tracks, breathing in the winter, counting the crystals, and catching the snowflakes.
