Sights & events in Valle Aurina-Ahrntal

valle-aurina-ahrntalValle Aurina-Ahrntal is the northernmost side valley in South Tyrol and covers an area of 630km². More than 80 mountains over 3000m in altitude tower above this picturesque valley rich in history.

For more than 500 years the area was a hub of copper mining. Today the mining museum in Prettau is one of the valley's main attractions and gives a fascinating insight into life working underground many centuries ago. The journey down into the mine on the original miners' railway is an experience in itself.

Other local highlights include the mineral museum near St. Johann and the Maranathana museum of nativity scenes.

Culture and traditions play an important role here. That is underlined by the many processions, festivals and celebrations held throughout the year, such as the tradition of bringing the cows back down into the valley at the end of the summer grazing season.

Foodies will enjoy the weekly farmers' markets, where they can try some of the local produce, including a wide selection of different cheeses made with berries and mountain herbs.

On warm summer days the water adventure area with its swings, climbing towers and high rope adventure courses is popular with families.
