at Valle Aurina
The place where extreme mountain climber Hans Kammerlander settled down to live can only have the most beautiful tours for ambitious mountain climbers. The residents of the Valle Aurina-Ahrntal have the proudest peaks of the main ridge of the Alps right in front of their noses – and they even get the sunny side. The starting point for numerous mountain tours is found right in the Valle Aurina. One special highlight for friends of nature is the heavenly and undisturbed Vedrette di Ries-Aurina/Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park, right outside the front door. Along with its “neighbors”, the Hohe Tauern National Park and the Zillertal Alpine Protected Area, it offers the largest area at 2,475 sq. km (612,000 acres) with Alpine landscapes that range from respectfully tended to completely undisturbed.
But back to the Valle Aurina: examples of worthwhile day trips include the path to the Cima di Valle-Wollbachspitze (3,210 m/10,532 ft.) from S. Giacomo-St. Jakob, which requires an average of nine and a half hours. Only for the proficient, but all the more impressive, is the Stabler Mountain Trail, which leads from Rio Bianco-Weißenbach for around eleven hours past rocky lakes between 2,000 and 2,700 m (6,600 and 8,900 ft.) to Lutago-Luttach. From S. Giovanni-St. Johann, there is a demanding mountain tour to the highest Alpine refuge in the Zillertal Alps. At 2,922 m (9,587 ft.), the Rifugio Vittorio Veneto-Schwarzensteinhütte is not only a destination in and of itself, but also the starting point for the peaks of the Sasso Nero-Schwarzenstein at 3,368 m (11,050 ft.). But those “last few feet” are only recommended for experienced high elevation climbers.
