at Valle Aurina
With brisk skating motions, the young man glides over the sun-drenched terrain past the Church of the Holy Spirit. No need for snow cannons here: the snowy hillsides are all naturally made. The excellently groomed cross country ski trails for both skating and classic track skiing spread out gently on still undisturbed white. The Sonnenloipe (Sun Trail) near Casere-Kasern snakes its way through the moderately rising valley.
Again and again, when you think that you have left everything man-made behind you, an Alpine refuge surprises you. Like the original Schnaidaleachn Restaurant Bar: to get there, you have to start from Rio Bianco-Weißenbach and get the winding roads of the “black” cross country ski trail loop under your skis, heading into the valley. But perhaps more accessible for those cross country skiers who are not quite as experienced, there are “red” trails that lead out of the valley to the Buseggealm.
Anyone who doesn’t feel so sure of themselves on the narrow skis will find advice and support from the instructors at the Klausberg/Cadipietra-Steinhaus ski school. Skis, poles, and boots may be rented in Casere-Kasern and S. Giovanni-St. Johann.
There are 10 more kilometers of cross country trails in the Nordic ski centre “Alpinwellt Weißenbach” in Rio Bianco-Weißenbach.
