A Peek behind the Scenes

South Tyrolean Folklore Museum Dietenheim Teodone

Museums in and around Brunico

Where horses were once changed and coaches were stored, active cultural hustle and bustle is now the order of the day: the Brunico-Bruneck Municipal Museum was opened in 1995 in the former stables of the post office. Five to seven exhibitions each year present regional, national, and international art. Prints, paintings, sculptures, and photographs each get their turn.  The historical pillar of the institution is represented by the collections from the former Brunico Museum of Local History. They include outstanding examples of local sacred art such as the Late Gothic winged altar of Simon and Veit von Taisten and works by Michael Pacher, Friedrich Pacher, Paul Troger, and the Master of Uttenheim.

In addition to the internationally renowned Messner Mountain Museum RIPA in Brunico Castle at the entrance to the city (>>>virtual tour), or the Folklore Museum in Teodone-Dietenheim that is popular with everyone, the museum world of Brunico also includes such unique examples as the Firefighter’s Helmet Museum in Gais. Over seven hundred magnificent firefighter’s helmets from all over the world are on display in an area of 200 sq. m (nearly 2,200 sq. ft.)  The pieces on display include collector’s items made from leather, steel, and brass from Egypt, Thailand, Guatemala, and New York.
