White rises from the ground like a gateway that prescribes no particular path, yet still invites you to explore. An oval opening formed from interwoven pine branches, white in colour and firmly anchored in the landscape. It feels like a simple gesture, like an invitation to step through. And yet it fundamentally changes our perspective.
With “Portal”, Jan Langer, a Merano-born, self-taught and award-winning land art artist, has created a work that engages in a dialogue with the surrounding landscape. The approximately 4.5-metre-high sculpture frames the view and directs the gaze, inviting us to see the familiar in a new way. The mountains, the light, the horizon. It is a work that speaks of attentiveness, showing how deeply our perception depends on perspective. What do we fail to see because we have forgotten to look closely? Where do we choose to direct our gaze? “Portal” is a reminder that beauty rarely lies in the spectacular, but rather in pausing and rediscovering what has been there all along.
